Claude Skills explained: a library of instructions, tools and plugins
Understand what is actually added to a coding agent before installing a large skill collection
What you will learn
- Locate the useful unit
- Separate content from execution
- Set the evidence boundary
Before you start
- A disposable project
- A pinned repository revision
- One supported agent client
Turn a catalogue entry into a measured, reversible team decision
Key takeaways
- Skills are instructions and optional tools, not a new model.
- Repository counts in the pinned docs disagree.
- Treat third-party skill content as operational code.
Locate the useful unit
The repository packages task-specific guidance as SKILL.md files, with scripts and reference material alongside some skills. A skill tells an existing agent how to approach a task; it does not supply a new language model or guarantee that the agent will follow every instruction correctly.
The README also describes agents, personas and commands. Those are different interfaces, so a headline count of skills is a poor buying criterion. The pinned README and installation guide even give different counts; inspect the directory and choose the capability you need.
Separate content from execution
A plain instruction file can still change behavior: an agent may read it, run a bundled script or follow a workflow that touches a repository. Marketplace installation also introduces a plugin distribution layer.
That is why this series treats the library as executable third-party material, not a harmless collection of blog posts. Read the selected SKILL.md and its scripts before granting it access to a real project or credentials.
Set the evidence boundary
The nine chapters cover a narrow first install, team rollout, packaging, source inspection, operational cost, trust, alternatives and a pilot. They describe the repository at commit `19392f7`; the project may have changed since.
We inspected pinned documentation and source files. We did not install the library, execute its scripts or measure agent task quality. Any claim about an improved outcome needs a reproducible task and a review of the produced work.
Decision guide
| Criterion | Option A | Option B |
|---|---|---|
| Best when | You need predictable behavior and easy auditing | You need adaptive optimization and have reliable telemetry |
| Main risk | May leave performance on the table | Can become difficult to explain or debug |
Implementation steps
- 1
Pick one concrete task before browsing the catalogue.
- 2
Read the real skill directory and any scripts it references.
- 3
Pilot with disposable data and keep the agent provider unchanged.
Copy-ready example
task -> selected SKILL.md -> optional references/scripts
agent + provider -> proposed work -> human reviewFrequently asked questions
Will installing a skill improve every answer?
No. A skill can guide a task, but quality still depends on the agent, context, source material and review.
Are the skill counts a stable product specification?
No. The pinned README and installation guide disagree, so use the actual tree at the revision you install.
