Claude-Mem explained: what a coding agent remembers
Claude-Mem pilot: verify one remembered decision safely
Use two synthetic sessions and an explicit deletion check before team adoption
What you will learn
- Design the trial
- Test capture and recall
- Test recovery and removal
Before you start
- A synthetic two-session project
- One supported host
- A deliberate memory provider choice
Use two synthetic sessions and an explicit deletion check before team adoption
Key takeaways
- Capture success and useful recall are distinct.
- Privacy checks belong in the first pilot.
- A configuration-specific result should not become a universal claim.
Design the trial
Create a disposable repository with a fictional decision and no customer data. Choose a supported host, pin the package and select the observer provider deliberately.
Record where hooks, worker files and remote keys will live. If using a shared server, configure authentication and network restrictions before any client connects.
Test capture and recall
In session one, make a checkable decision and finish normally. In session two, query the index, inspect a timeline or observation ID, and compare the answer with the original file.
Include one synthetic secret wrapped in the documented exclusion tag. Search storage and retrieval to verify it was omitted in the chosen adapter; do not use a real secret as the test fixture.
Test recovery and removal
Restart the worker, inspect queue health, delete the test memory through the applicable interface and check backups or local files. Record wrong recalls, provider cost and the time to correct them.
A good pilot result is evidence for that host and configuration only. Further work on privacy previews or evaluation tooling is an editorial idea, not a promised upstream roadmap.
Decision guide
| Criterion | Option A | Option B |
|---|---|---|
| Best when | You need predictable behavior and easy auditing | You need adaptive optimization and have reliable telemetry |
| Main risk | May leave performance on the table | Can become difficult to explain or debug |
Implementation steps
- 1
Pin host, provider and synthetic repository.
- 2
Verify one fact and one excluded secret across sessions.
- 3
Test restart, deletion and rollback.

When is the pilot complete?
When recall, exclusion, cost and removal have been checked on the selected host.
Was any memory deleted during this review?
No. The series did not install or run Claude-Mem.
